Backstory

It was only a matter of time before mass adoption of Doc's crypto dethroned fiat across the globe.

In the aftermath, humanity stood on the cusp of a new era of digital industrial revolution, ushering in unprecedented freedoms and a nigh post-scarcity economy.

The future was bright, creativity and innovation exploded. Artists, inventors, and brilliant minds of all stripes were able to blend their work in new and exciting ways, supporting each other in rapid technological and cultural progress. By far the most important advancement of this new age era was Doc's invention of the Star Reactor which utilized cold fusion blending.

Years of experiments with cold fusion blending finally paid off in the work of Dr. Lawrence Edelbrock, genius inventor and philanthropist. He’d cracked the quantum code, gaining access to boundless zero-point energy with his new invention. The success of Star Reactor’s first ignition made global news, but the celebration didn’t last long.

Doc Edelbrock’s insanely wealthy patron, Baron Sigma, saw an opportunity for evil and took it. He sent his elite squad of AI-powered cyber apes to infiltrate Edelbrock’s laboratory and steal the Star Reactor! Edelbrock was captured, his lab absorbed into Sigma’s conglomerate, Dominion Enterprises. No one saw him for many years thereafter.

His grip on the globe became total. Every nation bowed to his power,and he stripped society of its resources, leaving only the scraps of the fallen civilization for people to build with. He forced the conquered governments to ban the building of machines, along with nearly every creative endeavor, under penalty of death. This of course was a ruse.

Baron Sigma used the vast power of the Star Reactor, along with his stolen cold fusion blending technology from Edelbrock’s lab, to grow his army of mindless cyber apes and conquer the world. Countless brilliant inventors, mechanics and physicists were held captive, forced to support the Baron’s evil ends.

The Return of Doc Edelbrock

Good news awaits

You were kneeling in an alleyway, hiding from police drones and the sun, trying in vain to repair the broken shopping cart that held all your belongings. Suddenly the old man's voice scraped your ears..

“Hey, you!”

You stood and brandished your wrench, the only good tool you’d ever been able to scavenge.

“No, no, I won’t hurt you!"

But you couldn’t find the voice’s owner..

Then he stepped out of the shadows, and you could see that he had been invisible, cloaked by a device worth more than the poverty-stricken city you lived in.

The old man was dressed in a raggedy lab coat and high leather boots. A ring of metal sat on his head like a crown, studded with antennae and sensors of all kinds. He wore huge, clunky goggles whose lenses kept changing color. You guessed that they were cycling through all the various frequencies his sensors were picking up. Making sure Sigma’s cyber apes didn’t get the drop on him.

You liked him already, even if he did look crazy.

“I can see you’re good with a wrench.. I could use your help.”

“What do you want of me old man? Who are you?”

The old man frowned and squinted his eyes at you, barely visible through the goggles. Then he nodded to himself, he’d decided to trust you.

“I am the great scientist and inventor, Doctor Lawrence Edelbrock!”

“The Edelbrock who invented the Star Reactor?”

“The very same, Sigma and his evil minions captured me,
but through ingenuity and patience, I escaped!

I have a secret lab now with a warehouse full of materials, and many other helpers, but we need more. We need to regain control of Nefty Gadgets Inc. Take it back from Dominion Enterprises and use the Star Reactor for good again.

Will you come with me?
